Exotic timber Camphor Laurel was reclaimed from Urunga Primary School on 5
January 1998. This exotic timber was stored for 11 years in a place where
timber drying was slow and even as possible before I decided to finishing the piece.
I continually customise tools to probe
the excitement of personal boundaries, as fresh ideas are born to explore the
possibilities of these organic treasures.

This handcrafted Tallowood coffee table table was
reclaimed from a tree growing between a
home and power lines at Coffs Harbour. Rare solid Tallowood this size should be
classed as exotic timber.

Already worthy to be called
heritage, I reclaim these urban forest giants from arborists work sites
around Emerald Beach NSW AUSTRALIA.
Sculpting them into
furniture gives me excitement as an artist.
Their raw beauty, colours,
size and durability have inspired me to sculpt from them design
furniture that has to be individually imagined for each of these
majestic natural pieces. I physically and mentally roll them around
trying to discover how to express the medium the best way possible.
Flashes of new designs are sketched so when a future log is inspected, I can better recall
inspirations that had previously jogged my mojo as the first cut is
usually critical.
Always
bound by the natural wood shape, this design furniture ascribes together the
attributes of style, function, weight, balance, and strength, and
while preserving choice under bark surfaces, a refining continues until all
attributes are unified.
Sculptables regularly feature wavy
grain areas that are harmonious in gradually expressing the subtle natural
forces still present in the wood and I desire this slight sculptural relief
(striation) that looks and feels like real timber should to present to my client a remarkable piece
of nature that continues to hold its heritage value.
